Target Fishing of Shrimp With Fewer Nets

shrimping-vessel-2

You no longer need multiple sizes of nets for different types or sizes of shrimp.

One net can be configured to fish deep water brown shrimp, shallow water white shrimp, large shrimp, or small shrimp so you no longer need multiple sizes of nets for different types or sizes of shrimp.

The Wing Trawling System holds the net open differently than otter trawl doors by stretching the webbing into a diamond shape and not into a square. This method allows the net to be held in an open position at all times and the position changes very little with surface conditions or surging of the vessel.

As shrimp migrate their size grows smaller. Since you can now capture these smaller shrimp with larger net webbing you can eliminate the need to inventory a smaller mesh net for seasons of smaller shrimp. The only change needed is to the cod end or tail bag to retain the shrimp once captured.

Better fuel savings can be seen by using a larger mesh size and smaller diameter webbing in a composite type material. In our studies we used nylon which is with the most difficult towing material available. Trawling with the current at one time a speed over ground was achieved at 4.3 knots. As any shrimper knows, this is way too fast! A speed of 3.2 was adjusted by bringing the main engine down to 900 RPM. The only noticeable resistance to the towing vessel is the webbing being towed.
