Increased Fuel Savings

Fuel Savings Up To 50% While Trawling

It’s simple. Higher RPMs means higher fuel costs. The Wing Trawling System allows you to lower your vessel’s RPMs to the torque RPM while covering the same amount of ground.

During comparison tests, two vessels were equipped with otter trawl doors and the Wing Trawling System. The overall results in fuel savings achieved while using the WTS were very similar between the two vessels.

The first vessel was a 60′ steel trawler with a single N-14 Cummins engine. After initial runs were done with otter trawl doors, the 9′ x 38′ trawl doors were removed and two WTS 25′ wings installed. The same nets used on the otter trawl doors were used on the WTS.

With the trawl doors in place, the towing RPMs on the main engine were 1450 RPMs moving at 2.3 knots. Installing the WTS allowed the engine to rev much slower at 1150 RPMs while actually moving faster at 2.8 knots. Faster trawling speeds with lower fuel consumption. Fuel consumption went from 10-12 gallons per hour down to 4-5 gallons per hour.

The second vessel was an 80′ steel, double-rigged trawler with twin 3406 Caterpillar (non-electronic) engines with 6 to 1 gears turning 60″ wheels in nozzles.
